Drinking water access study — NGO DWFA

A data analysis and a set of Tableau dashboards helping the NGO DWFA identify the countries where access to drinking water is most urgent, from global down to country level.

Completed

Context

Project carried out during my Data Analyst programme (OpenClassrooms) for the NGO DWFA, whose mission is to improve access to drinking water. The NGO needed a decision-support tool to direct its future field actions.

Problem statement

In which countries should the NGO act first, and how? Several dimensions had to be combined — demographics, urbanisation, level of water access, mortality linked to unsafe water and political stability — to separate the countries where water services must be created, those where they must be modernised, and those where advisory support is most relevant.

Approach

  • Data preparation: consolidation of international indicators (total and urban population, "basic" and "safely managed" drinking-water access, mortality attributed to unsafe water, political stability index) over 2000–2018.
  • Exploration and analysis: choropleth maps, time series with trend lines, scatter plots crossing water access, mortality and political stability.
  • Segmentation: grouping countries into 3 clusters to target country profiles.
  • Three-level dashboards: global, continental (Africa focus) and national, with filters by year, region and granularity (rural / urban / total).
  • Data storytelling: three Tableau stories guiding the reader from the global view down to country-level recommendations (service creation, modernisation, advisory).

Results

  • 3 dashboards (global, continental, national) and 3 interactive stories published on Tableau Public, viewed 149 times.
  • A clear reading of drinking-water access gaps and of the countries to target along three lines of action: service creation, modernisation, advisory.
  • A reusable tool the NGO can use to update its priorities as new data becomes available.
